My name is Hassan Ali. I'm the founder of HasDelivery — a scheduled halal grocery and food delivery service serving Portland and Tigard, Oregon. Here's how we got here.
I was working as a delivery driver on a scooter for Deliveroo and Uber Eats. It was the perfect job at that stage of my life — flexible enough to fit around prayer, around family, around everything that mattered.
But there was a problem I couldn't ignore. Order after order came in for restaurants and stores selling food I couldn't deliver in good conscience. Alcohol. Non-halal meat. Products my deen wouldn't let me carry.
I could reject them. But every rejected order hurt my acceptance rate. Lower acceptance meant fewer orders offered to me. Fewer orders meant less income. The system was quietly pushing me toward compromise.
I called both companies. I explained the problem — that Muslim drivers were being penalized for staying true to their values. Nothing changed.
Different country, different platforms — DoorDash, Uber Eats — same story. Half my orders were things I couldn't deliver without compromising my values.
By then I wasn't just driving for pocket money. I was helping support my family. Rejecting orders meant less for us at home. It was harder to accept the pattern this time.
Two countries. Same broken system. I realized this wasn't a local issue — it was a gap in the whole industry.
Driverstold me: yes, we'd work for a halal-only platform. As Muslims, the wealth we earn has to be pure. Money made delivering haram goods — even indirectly — has no barakah.
Merchantstold me: yes, we'd partner with a platform built for us. They were already fielding customer requests they couldn't fulfill.
Customers told me: yes, we need this. Not everyone has a car. Not everyone lives near a halal grocer. Not everyone has hours to spend shopping. For a lot of Muslim families in the metro, finding pure halal groceries without a full day of errands was genuinely difficult.
Every merchant on this platform is a dedicated halal business. No mixed menus. No exceptions. If it's on HasDelivery, it's halal — that's the whole reason we exist.
Drivers get a real base rate for every delivery, plus 100% of their tips. No tips being counted toward base pay. No system that pushes drivers to compromise their values to make ends meet.
Grocery shopping isn't an emergency. You plan meals for the week. You know when you'll cook. Customers pick a delivery window that fits their day — no rushed 15-minute drop-offs, no guessing when the driver will arrive.
It's a workplace where drivers don't have to choose between rizq and deen. It's a marketplace where merchants who've been overlooked by mainstream platforms have a home. It's a service where every family in our community can shop without the mental load of “is this really halal?”
We're starting in Tigard and Portland because it's our home. But the same problem exists everywhere Muslims live and work. Insha'Allah, this is just the beginning.
